Go to your local health department and talk to one of the environmental health specialists. They can tell you what the job entails and it's education requirements (a B.S. mim.) and how to get started. For education, you’ll need a lot of chemistry, biology and related sciences. They do much more than inspect kitchens. EHSs are on the front lines of public health on the local jurisdiction. They teach food safety, give advice to the public, enforce law and regulation, and issue permits for restaurants and other permitted facilities. EHSs deal with the whole realm of environmental health, not just food safety. You have to be well-versed in the following: *food protection *drinking water quality *water sanitation *solid waste *liquid waste *medical waste management *onsite septic systems *housing *institutional environmental health *vector control *land use *recreational swimming areas and waters *hazardous materials management *underground storage tank control *emergency preparedness *community noise control *electromagnetic radiation control *milk and dairy sanitation Also look for professional associations on the Internet. EHSs are also called sanitarians, so you may need to search on that term. Here are a couple California-based associations: http://www.ccdeh.com/ http://www.ceha.org/ Here’s what California requires to become a registered environmental health specialist: http://www.dhs.ca.gov/org/ps/ddwem/environmental/rehs/rehs.htm Look for similar requirements in your state. If you repost this in the FOOD SAFETY FORUM you may have more chance of a response. I have been interested in an inspection career as well, but it does require more applied sciences than i have taken for the two liberal arts degrees I already hold and I can't afford the time off to go back to school , but if you are 25-30 or younger , there's still time for you! good luck. Hey you look like you have some food safety expertise...Would you please checkout the food safety section Ira added to the website? It would be great to get some more input from you there if you have the time. Thanks. Christ Peace, Hashi IP: Logged |

Hello! I would suggest that you start with all the ServSafe certifications you can garner...that is a great start and may get your foot in the door as far as consulting and teaching. Check with your State Restaurant Association or check out http://www.nraef.org/ And as always pray the Lord desires that for you...The great thing about food safety is you are teaching stwardship in a very real sense. Because we care and as Christ commands us to Love...Its all about Love..------------------ In HIS Love, Leo Griego
