How do you go about coloring cookie dough. Looking at spliting up the dough and coloring it half red and half blue.

Also what would be a good cookie dough to use if one is looking at making a flag cookie. Rolling out the dough and placing it ontop of each other so it looks like red white and blue then cutting it. Im thinking something like icebox cookie dough would be good here. Also would i need to worry about it spreding when it bakes. just wondering if it will mess up the desighn.

I'm thinking either a meringue - one batch would already be bright white and you could pipe out the stripes with colored meringue for the rest. That would be pretty time consuming, but would look great.

The other option off the top of my head would be to use a sugar cookie dough. It's already a very light color and I think it would take well to the coloring.

I like your idea of the sliced icebox cookie too. Doing that you could roll out big strips to have a few different stripes in the dough and could probably get a nice "flag" look to them. You'll need a really sharp knife with hot water or a meat slicer so that the layers don't bleed when you cut into it.
